EC rules out army deployment in city polls

Staff Correspondent: The Election Commission (EC) has ruled out BNP’s demand of deploying army in the city corporation polls.

Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury came told this to the media after a meeting with BNP delegation at Election Bhaban on Monday.

He said, “There is no need to deploy army in the upcoming elections of three city corporations. The atmosphere still remains smooth in the cities. Administration was given strict instructions to keep the environment well.”

“We held a meeting with a BNP delegation. They placed some demands. We will look into if someone was arrested without warrant. We instructed police administration not to arrest someone without warrant,” he added.

“We asked them (BNP) to submit lists of polling agents. We will give it to police so that they will not face harrasement,” the commissioner said.

In reply to a query, he said, “Close circuit (CC) cameras were also used in Gazipur city polls. This time, CC cameras will be used in several centres in these three city polls.”
