Staff Correspondent, Sylhet: BNP candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury was unofficially re-elected mayor of Sylhet City Corporation on Saturday by defeating Awami League candidate Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran.

Ariful Haque bagged 92, 588 votes while his rival AL candidate Badar Uddin Ahmed got 86, 392 in the polls which were held at 134 centres.

Ariful defeated ruling Awami League candidate Badar Uddin Ahmed by a margin of 6,196 votes in a close contest.

Vote counting begun after voting for re-polling at two suspended centres under Sylhet City Corporation ended on Saturday.

The voting began from 8:00am today and continued till 4:00pm without break.

The city dwellers witnessed heavy rain since this morning, causing slow voting at the two centres.

But after the rain stops around noon, the voters began to cast their votes with much enthusiasm.

The Election Commission announced the date of the re-voting at the centres as it was cancelled following anomalies and irregularities during the polls on July 30.
