Spice prices soar ahead of Eid-ul-Azha

Nasir Uddin Chowdhury: The retail price of most of the spices stared to increase in local markets due to the rising demand before Eid-ul-Azha.

Traders said that most spices used in meat recipe went up as Eid approaches.  Cardamom, Cardamom price goes through the roof as it is mostly used during Eid ul Azha.

The price of cardamom mostly used in cooking meat to add flavour saw a sharp rise to Tk 1,920 per kg last week from Tk 1,750. Similarly, price of cinnamon reached at Tk 330 which was Tk 268 earlier.

Cumin, another vital spice for meat recipe, saw also price hike to Tk 335 per kg from Tk 283 last week.

While visiting different kitchen markets in the capital this correspondent found Cumin imported from Syria is now selling at Tk 450 per kg against Tk 390 while Sweet Cumin is selling at Tk 120 per kg.

Nayon, a trader in Rampura wholesale market said, almost all types of spices are imported in the country. The demand of spices goes high during Eid-ul-Azha. Using the high demand of spices, importers try to make more profit at that time of demand.
