RMG workers clash with cops at Hemayetpur

Staff Correspondent, Savar: At least 20 people were injured in a clash between garment workers and policemen in Hemayetpur area of Savar on Tuesday morning.

Workers of Dipto Fashion started demonstration blocking the road in the morning on the third consecutive day of their protest over the disparity in pay in the new wage structure. Later, workers of Standard Group joined the demonstration. 

The clash took place around 9.00am when police fired several teargas shells and charged batons on the workers.

The workers said the monthly wage for those in the seventh grade, who are entry-level workers, increased to Tk 8,000 from Tk 5,300 as per the latest gazette published by the government last year. But, the wages of the workers in other grades did not increase at the same rate.

Flowing the incident, the authorities have shut down at least 30 factories.
