Polychem director gets one year in jail

Staff Correspondent: A court in Dhaka sentenced Abdur Rob, the director of the now-defunct Polychem Laboratories Limited, to one year’s simple imprisonment in a case filed for manufacturing toxic paracetamol syrups that caused deaths of children in 1992.

Judge Syed Kamal Hossain of the Dhaka Drug Court delivered the verdict on Thursday.

The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default of which, he will have to serve three months more in jail.

Soon after the verdict, Rob secured ad-interim bail from the same court on ground that he would appeal against the verdict.

The court acquitted three other accused from the case as allegation brought against them were not proven.

The three accused are Polychem’s manager ASM Golam Qader, pharmacists Mahbubul Alam and Delwar Hossain.

The case was filed on December 19 in 1992.
