DIG Mizan tarnishes image of police: HC

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) on Monday made an observation about the much-talked suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman that he (Mizan) destroyed the image and reputation of police. We cannot grant bail to him.

The HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman came up with the comment while hearing bail plea filed by DIG Mizan on Monday afternoon.

At the very beginning of hearing, DIG Mizan’s lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi told the court that the police personel (Mizanur Rahman) is a very honest person. He was engaged with uprooting militancy and achieved gold medal for his contribution. He had played a lot of glorious role in the police force.

In reply, the court said, “We saw on television that he (Mizanur Rahman) was desperately delivering speeches over bribery. He not only tarnish image of his own institute, but also another one. We will not grant him bail, but hand over to police.”

Later on, the court handed DIG Mizanur Rahman to police custody and asked them to appear him before the Dhaka’s Special Judge Court by 24 hours.

DIG Mizan was standing in the court room until the hearing ended.

Earlier, DIG Mizan appeared before the court seeking bail in a case filed against him for amassing wealth of Tk 3.28 crore illegally.

On June 19, the court ordered to freeze and confiscate all the moveable and immoveable properties of DIG Mizan and close his bank accounts.

DIG Mizan came under scanner in January last year when he was accused of forcibly marrying and torturing a woman.

Later ACC opened an investigation into him.
