Lovers commit suicide

DHAKA, Sept 12: A private university student allegedly committed suicide in the capital’s Vatara area on Thursday afternoon after his girlfriend, a dental student, took her life in Rajshahi in the morning.

The deceased were M Minhaz Chowdhury, 24, a freshman of Electrical Engineering department of University of Information Technology and Sciences and his girlfriend Fahmida Sultana, 22, a final-year student of Rajshahi Dental College.

Minhaz, son of Mizanur Rahman, was hailed from Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district. He had been living in a student mess on Islami School Road of Khilbarirtek in Vatara.

Fahmida, daughter of Ekramul Haque, of Debinagar in Chapainawabganj Sadar, had been living at Bahrampur under Rajpara police station in Rajshahi city.

Sources said Minhaz was pronounced dead on arrival at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 2:00pm. The victim’s friends Raju, Meem and others took him to the hospital.

They told reporters at DMCH that Minhaz broke the news of her girlfriend’s suicide to Meem over phone in the morning and switched off his cellphone.

Soon they rushed to Minhaz’ flat but found the main door locked from inside.

However, they opened the door by a duplicate key, collected from the building owner, and found him hanging from a ceiling fan in his bedroom.

Vatara police station OC Mohammad Ali said police received the body from DMCH and sent it to the morgue for an autopsy.

An unnatural death case was filed in this connection, he said.

Minhaz’ relatives said Fahmida committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her bedroom at their rented house on Uttara Lane at Bahrampur in Rajshahi city on Thursday morning.

She committed suicide for her second-time failure to pass in a course, sources added.
