Low voter turnout is threat to democracy: Mahbub Talukdar

Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar on Monday said low voter turnout is a threat to democracy.

He made the opinion while addressing a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Center on the occasion of National Voters' Day on Monday.

Expressing tension, he said it is seen that voters’ reluctance to go to voting centers.

Mahbub Talukdar said, steps should be taken analyzing the reasons behind voters’ reluctance.

“It is not the Election Commission’s (EC) duty to increase voter turnout, rather its duty is to organize and ensure a fair vote,” he added.
