VAT intelligence sues Mr Baker for VAT evasion

Mr Baker Cake & Pastry Shop has been sued for tax dodging worth Tk 80.16 crore.

The Value Added Tax (VAT) intelligence directorate filed the case against the shop over VAT evasion by concealing sales figure of Tk265 crore, VAT intelligence directorate director general (DG) Dr Moinul Khan confirmed.

He said, the case has been filed against Mr Baker. Following specific allegation, on October 20, a team of the directorate conducted a raid on a factory of Mr Baker on Mokdam Ali Sarker Road in Turag of the city.

During the raid, officials found that the bakery was running business without keeping any record of sales. VAT intelligence deputy director Nazmun Nahar Kaysar and Ferdousi Mahbub conducted the drive.

Earlier on October 18, in a facebook post, retired senior secretary Asif Jaman claimed that Mr Baker did not provide VAT invoice. Later, following his complaint, NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Munim directed VAT officials to start investigation.
