Bapex set to discover new gas field in Zakiganj

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (Bapex) is optimistic to discover a new gas field at Zakiganj in Sylhet as it sees signs of success in exploration. This is going to be the 28th gas field in Bangladesh.

Bapex was successful in Drill Stem Test (DST) at 10:15 am on Tuesday (June 15).

The pressure inside the well is 6,000 PSI (per square inch), and the floating pressure is more than 13,000. First level test is running in the field. Bapex is optimistic over getting gas in of 4 levels in the well. Beanibazar is 32 km away from this new field while Golapganj is 46 km away.

Bapex managing director Mohammad Ali told the media that he did not want to comment on the matter right now. We hope for something better. There may be a pocket as well, so we have kept it under observation. We can tell after a couple of hours of observation. It will not be right to tell something right now.

So far 27 gas fields have been discovered in Bangladesh. The proven reserves in these gas fields are 21.4 TCF and the potential reserves are 6 TCF. Of this, about 18 TCF has been lifted. As such, there are only 3 TCFs left, and the potential reserves are about 7 TSF.
