Appellate Division stays Shahed’s bail order in arms case

The Appellate Division has suspended the bail order by the High Court to Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed Karim in an arms case, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

A three-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Senior Judge Md. Nuruzzamano announced the order on Tuesday.

Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi represented the state in court, while Senior Advocate SM Shahjahan appeared for Shahed.
On July 15 in 2020, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Shahed from Satkhira's border area and conducted a raid in Uttara, where they recovered weapons. RAB filed an arms case with Uttara West Police Station.

On September 28 in 2020, a special court in Dhaka sentenced Shahed to life imprisonment in the case.

Shahed appealed to the High Court and was granted bail on June 7, 2021. However, on June 12, the chamber court adjourned the case at the request of the state, with the Appellate Division upholding the stay on October 31. That year, Shahed again sought bail from the Appellate Division.
