A 22-day ban on catching, selling, stocking and transportation of the national fish Hilsa will be from October 22 to November 2.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim said the decision was taken at a meeting of the National Task Force on Hilsa Resource Development on Wednesday.
The decision was taken in a bid to ensure the safe spawning of the fish and to boost the production of Hilsa.
As per law, Hilsa fishing during the period is a punishable offense and those violating the law will face up to two years in jail or up to Tk 5000 fine or both punishment.
Hilsa has the highest contribution in the country's fish production as the single fish species.
