EU won’t send full-fledged observation team in national polls

The European Union (EU) will not send a full-fledged election observation mission during the upcoming national election in Bangladesh.
The EU took such decision based on the assessment of the EU exploratory mission that visited Bangladesh in January and July this year.
A formal statement in this regard may come soon from Brussels, EU headquarters.
Bangladesh government has already been informed about the matter, a source said.
The EU, however, indicated that it would send a small group of experts during the upcoming elections scheduled to be held in January next year.
It was learnt that the EU considers the environment in Bangladesh is not conducive to observe elections.
The EU sent a letter to the Election Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (September 20), informing their opinion.
