Show-cause notice served to Masud over Dhanmondi detainee release

NCP`s senior joint chief coordinator, Abdul Hannan Masud

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has issued a show-cause notice to its senior joint chief coordinator, Abdul Hannan Masud, for personally appearing at Dhaka’s Dhanmondi police station to secure the release of three individuals after their detention for allegedly causing unrest in a residential area while identifying themselves as “coordinators”.

The notice, signed by NCP’s joint office secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat, was issued on Wednesday (May 21).

Three individuals were detained by Dhanmondi Police on May 19 for allegedly causing unrest in a residential area. One of them, Saiful Islam Rabbi – the Mohammadpur unit convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement – had previously been removed from his position by the organisation’s central committee on grounds of ethical misconduct, according to the notice.

Despite this, Hannan appeared at the police station on Tuesday (May 20) and secured the release of the three detainees by submitting written undertakings on their behalf.

Following the incident, you have been instructed to submit a written explanation to the head of the party’s disciplinary committee within three days, clarifying the incident and stating why organisational action should not be taken against him.

Earlier, on Monday (May 19) night, three coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement allegedly caused an unrest in Dhanmondi by labelling a publisher as an accomplice of “fascism” and staging a protest in front of his residence. The police later detained them and took them to Dhanmondi Police Station.
