Staff Correspondent: Jatiya Party candidate Selim Osman won the Narayanganj 5 by-election held on Thursday.

According to unofficial result, Salim Osman bagged 82,856 votes.

His nearest independent candidate SM Akram bagged 66,114 votes in the election that took place from 8:00am to 4:00pm Thursday without any break.

Returning Officer Mihir Sarowar Morshed announced the initial results on Thursday night.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad claimed that the by-election was free and fair though allegations of vote rigging and ballot box-stuffing against Salim Osman were emerged from other candidates.

The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Jatiya Party MP Nasim Osman on April 29.
