‘Awami League kills democracy in 1975’

“On January 25, 1975, the then Awami League government established Bakshal to perpetuate the one-party rule. Today is the dark day. Even now they are running a one-party system. They have taken the country to the brink of destruction. No matter how much Awami League says that they are a democratic party, a party of liberation, it is actually a lie. Awami League has killed democracy by strangling it.”

Speakers said this at the ‘Democracy Killing Day and 10 Point Demand for Democracy Restoration’ programme organized by Dhaka Metropolitan North and South BNP at Nayapaltan in the capital on Wednesday (January 25).

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said as the chief guest that democracy was killed on 25 January 1975. They have broken the democratic state structure. At that time, everyone was opposing Bakshal. But it is matter of regret that the Awami League cannot tolerate different opinion.

Referring to the history of Awami League, Mirza Fakhrul said, even after 50 years of the Independence, we have to stand on the streets and protest for the right to vote, democracy and freedom of speech. This government has destroyed everything. So they are afraid of people’s movement.

BNP Secretary General said that they are arresting the leaders and activists of different parties. The case is being filed, the jail is full. We will soon free all the activists through agitation. Our movement is going on and will continue on the streets to bring back democracy in the country. This government will not even find an escape route due to the movement.
