A dismal batting display handed Bangladesh a heavy defeat by an innings and 78 runs in the Colombo Test against Sri Lanka on Saturday. With this defeat, they lost the series to the hosts 1-0.
Resuming the day at 115 for 6, Bangladesh lost Litton Das early in the second over. Having scored 14, he was caught by Kusal Mendis off Prabath Jayasuriya, who continued his dominance with the ball.
Nayeem Hasan, who remained unbeaten overnight, couldn’t hold on for long either. He was stumped for 5, again off Jayasuriya, who then claimed his fifth wicket of the innings by dismissing Taijul Islam for 6, caught and bowled.
The final blow came from Tharindu Ratnayake, who trapped Ebadot Hossain leg-before for 6, ending Bangladesh’s innings at 133.
With this crushing victory, Sri Lanka win the second Test and the series 1-0, after the first Test in Galle ended in a draw.
Jayasuriya finished as the standout bowler, adding another five-wicket haul to his name in what was a dominant performance by the home side.
This series was the first contest for both teams in the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. While Sri Lanka made a great start, Bangladesh will have to wait to register their first win.
With the Test series now concluded, both teams will look ahead to the three-match ODI series, starting on July 2, with the remaining matches on July 5 and 8.
