Bangladesh suffered a 99-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the third and final ODI at Pallekele on Tuesday, losing the series 2-1 after a poor batting display.
Having won the toss and opted to bat first, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 285 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs.
On a surface where Sri Lanka’s innings was anchored by a classy 124 from Kusal Mendis and a steady 58 from skipper Charith Asalanka, Bangladesh’s reply faltered despite Towhid Hridoy’s fighting fifty, as they were bowled out for 186 in 39.4 overs to lose by 99 runs.
Chasing 286, Bangladesh’s top order once again failed to establish a meaningful platform. Opener Tanzid Hasan provided a glimpse of promise with a brisk 17, but his innings was cut short, and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s lean patch continued as he was bowled for a duck by Dushmantha Chameera, leaving Bangladesh reeling early.
Parvez Hossain Emon attempted to stabilise the innings with 26, but the introduction of spin throttled the scoring rate, forcing him into a misjudged slog sweep that found the fielder. Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz tried to inject momentum with a six off Chameera, but his aggressive approach led to his dismissal for 28, further denting Bangladesh’s chase.
