Sport Correspondent: Bangladesh National Women Cricket Team faced a narrow defeat of 17 runs in the second of a five-match One Day International series against South Africa National Women Cricket Team in Cox's Bazar Saturday.
The visitors were bowled out for 223 in 49 overs after they won toss and chose to bat first at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh Women managed to score 206 for 8 in 50 overs.
Choosing to bat first in a misty morning, South Africa Women started well and made a 115-run opening partnership. However, Bangladesh fowlers fought back and dismissed Lizelle Lee, the Player of the Match of the last game, in the 22nd over.
Lee scored 70 off 57 balls hitting 13 fours. Another opener Andrie Steyn added 66 off 98 balls with 8 boundaries. The visitors lost their all ten wickets for next 108 runs. They were all out in 49 overs scoring 223 runs.
Khadija Tul Kubra claimed 4 wickets for 56 while Nahida Akter, Lata Mondal, Panna Ghosh and Jahanara Alam got one wicket each.
Chasing a decent total, Bangladesh Women had a slow start and lost first wicket for 13 in the 6th over. Opener Sanjida Islam went for 4. Fargana Hoque added only 8 runs as the hosts lost second wicket for 43.
However, another opener Sharmin Akhter and skipper-wicketkeeper Rumana Ahmed made a 127-run partnership off 31.1 overs in the third wicket.
At one stage, Bangladesh needed 56 runs from 48 balls with 8 wickets in hand. But Marizanne Kapp stuck and bowled Rumana in the 43rd over to break the partnership. She scored 68 off 95 hitting 5 fours.
Bangladesh's changes were narrowed as Sharmin fell victim of a run out in the following over. She scored 74 runs, her highest ODI score, off 127 balls smashing 10 fours. Kapp struck in the next over and made Salma Khatun (7) caught by Steyn. Bangladesh lost fifth wicket for 179, 45 runs away from the target in 33 balls.
The rest of the Bangladesh cricketers couldn't deal with the required run rate and their innings stopped at 206 for 8 in 50 overs.
Country's leading brand Walton is sponsoring the series which has officially been named as 'Walton Bangladesh-South Africa Women's ODI Cricket Series 2017'.
South Africa opener Lizelle Lee was awarded the 'Walton Player of the Match' award for her outstanding batting. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) selector Habibul Bashar and Walton Group's Assistant Director Milton Ahmed handed over the award to Lee.
The visitors are leading the series 2-0 as they also won the first match by 86 runs.
The rest of the matches will be held at the same venue on 16, 18 and 20th January.
