Health expenditure increased three folds in five years: Study

Healthcare expenditure in Bangladesh has increased three folds in 2023 compared to 2018. In a span of five years, the per capita monthly health expenditure has increased to Tk 1,704.

The South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) and the Global Development Institute of the University of Manchester, UK unveiled this information at a press release on Wednesday (March 27).

According to the study, compared to 2018, the average per capita health expenditure has increased three folds in 2023 to Tk 1,704 per month. However, these increased healthcare costs are not equal to the people of all incomes. The increase was only double for the 20 percent of people who were poor, while the increase was six folds for the 20 percent of the people, who were rich.
According to SANEM, the coronavirus pandemic could have a serious impact on rising health costs. Bangladesh’s main success in dealing with the corona epidemic was timely delivery of vaccines. Covid-19 vaccination started in Bangladesh on January 27, 2021. During this period, 77 percent of men and 40 percent of women received more than two doses of the vaccines.
