Doctors suspend 24-hour private practice in Chattogram

Doctors in Chattogram announced suspension of services at private chambers for 24-hour from today (April 23) protesting at the attack on two physicians.

Earlier, protesting the attack on two doctors, all health professionals observed two hours work abstention on Sunday and Monday.

A press notification signed by Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Chattogram wing general secretary Dr Md Faysal Iqbal said that all types of private practice (private chambers, new patient admissions in hospitals, new patient services at diagnostic centers) will be closed from Tuesday 6 am to Wednesday 6 am.

Chittagong district president of BMA Dr. Mujibul Haque Khan said that doctors are being tortured in various ways while performing their professional duties. Attacks on doctors are increasing due to lack of proper justice. Doctors in general are very unsafe at work. There needs to be a strong law to protect doctors.

On April 10, Raktim Das, 29, a physician at the emergency ward of Patiya general hospital in Chittagong, was seriously injured after being attacked by local Awami League leaders for delay in treating a patient, who suffered a heart attack.

On April 14, Riaz Uddin Shiplo, 30, a physician of Chattogram medical centre hospital sustained injuries after being attacked by the relatives of a patient, who allegedly died due to wrong treatment.
