Police clash with protesting workers in Sreepur

Police locked into a clash with protesting workers of ‘RAK Ceramics Ltd’ in Gazipur’s Sreepur on Sunday morning to press home their 10-point demands.

The protesting workers blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, causing severe traffic congestion on both sides of the highway and creating chaotic situation.

This situation forced the law enforcement agencies to fire tear gas shells and use sound grenades to disperse the protesters.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station Mohammad Abdul Barik confirmed the news.

The OC said the protesters started throwing brick chips when the police personnel tried to remove the workers from road to ease the traffic. A chase and counter-chase took place between the groups. The police then fired tear shells to bring the situation under control.

The factory workers began their protests early in the morning, calling for their demands, including payment of outstanding wages and allowances pending for seven months.
