Missing woman’s body recovered 37 hrs after falling into manhole

The body of Fariya Tasnim Jyoti, who went missing after falling into an uncovered manhole in Gazipur’s Tongi, was recovered after 37 hours.

Her body was found on Tuesday (July 29) around 9:00 am at Shalikchura Beel in Tongi. Earlier, on Sunday (July 27) at around 9:00 pm, she fell into an open manhole near Hossain Market along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

Tongi Fire Service senior station officer Md. Shahin Alam confirmed the incident.

He said, “We have been able to recover the body on the third day of her missing during a search operation in the morning.”

Fariya Tasnim Jyoti, 30, was a resident of Masjid Para in Ward-4 of Chuadanga Municipality and the daughter of the late Oliullah Ahmed Babul. She lived in Mirpur, Dhaka and worked in the marketing department of a private company. According to her family, she was on her way to deliver medicine to Tongi Hospital, walking alongside the road when the incident occurred.

Police and eyewitnesses said that a section of the roadside drain in front of Imperial Hospital in Tongi had long been without a cover slab. No warning signs or safety barriers had been installed at the site. Jyoti accidentally fell into the open drain while walking, and the strong current swept her away.

Following the incident, Gazipur Fire Service and City Corporation teams launched the rescue efforts.
