President, PM mourn landslide deaths

Desk Report: President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed deep shock at the deaths due to landslide in three districts, followed by Monday’s daylong rainfall that was influenced by a depression in the Bay.

In separate condolence messages, the president and the premier prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved families.

Earlier, heavy monsoon rains have killed at least 39 people in southeast Bangladesh, most of them buried under landslides on Tuesday.

Police warned that the death toll would likely rise as emergency workers reached remote parts of the affected area, where telephone and transport links had been cut.
