18 fishermen missing after trawler capsize in bay

Barguna Correspondent: Eighteen fishermen went missing as a trawler sank in Behala Mandarbaria area of the Bay of Bengal on Sunday night.

The incident took place around 11:00pm after the trawler fell in storm.

Shahin Fitar, owner of the trawler, said, “The trawler FB Shahjalal entered the India maritime area on Saturday midnight due to bad weather. Later, the trawler capsized while it was returning from Indian territory on Sunday night, leaving 19 fishermen drowned. Though one fisherman Nasir was found unconscious after the incident, still 18 are missing.”

Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the district trawler owner association, said, “Nasir was found unconscious at Mandarbaria area. But other 18 fishermen are still missing. Three trawlers of the association are kept ready for rescue operation. But the drive hampered due to bad weather.”

The missing include Ripon, Mamun, Babul, Tota Mia, Hakim, Kabir Hossain, Masum, Abu Hanifa, Shahin, Hiru, Sultan, Rasel, Khairul, Monir Hossain, Ekhtiar, Siraj. They all hailed from Patharghata and Bagerhat sadar upazila.
