183 Moulvibazar schools shut for flood

Hossain Ahmed, Moulvibazar: The flash flood caused by heavy downpour and hillslides has submerged Kulaura, Juri and Borolekha upazilas of Moulvibazar, forcing the school authorities to stop running academic activities.

Most of the houses, schools and roads are now underwater, leaving several lakh people stranded in water.

Around 183 primary and high schools in the district have gone under water, shutting all academic activities.

About 29 schools are being used as the shelter centers for the flood-hit people.

Vast tracts of the district have become inundated for the third time this year due to the flash floods and the following onrush from the hills.

Mizanur Rahman, a student of Tarapasha High School of Rajnagar upazila in the district, said, "Our homes have gone under flood water. That's why our study is being disrupted."

Many school buildings that went under flood water have been largely damaged and many of them are at risk, said Abdul Alim, a primary education officer.
