Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: Two police personnel have been withdrawn following the incident of beating an officer of state-owned Sonali Bank that happened in the industrial town of Tongi of Gazipur on Sunday morning.

The two policemen are sergeant Md Firoz and constable Shyamal Datta.

Gazipur traffic division assistant police superintendent Md Saleh Uddin Ahmed said sergeant Firoz and constable Shyamal have been withdrawn immediately and attached to Gazipur police line.

Md Ali Hossain, 45, a resident of Sataish bank colony area and an officer of the bank's National University branch in Gazipur, faced the incident in Sataish area of Tongi in the morning.

Ali Hossain said he started for office, hiring a rickshaw from near his residence around 9:00am. Sergeant Md Firoz and constable Shyamal Datta stopped his rickshaw when it reached the end of Sataish road.

The rickshaw puller had an altercation with the police men. Ali Hossain said he told the police men that he was leaving the rickshaw paying the rickshaw puller the fare.

“But the police men hurled abusive words at me. All of a sudden they turned furious and started beating me mercilessly. My shirt is torn apart and I am bleeding as my fingers are bruised,” he said.

Witnesses said the people near the spot protested at the police assault and cordoned the police men.

However, members of the Tongi police and traffic police went there and rescued two police men.
