2 schoolgirls drown in Turag River

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: Two schoolgirls drowned in the Turag River in Taltola Ferry Ghat area under Tongi Police Station in Gazipur district on Saturday afternoon.

Deceased Samira, 11, daughter of Sharif Hossain, and Sohagi, 12, daughter of Khokon Mia, were students of class-V at Uttara Model School.  They along with their parents would reside in Batulia area under the police station.

Saiful Islam, Tongi Fire Service’s fireman and rescuer, and locals said, “Three students-- Samira, Sohagi and Habiba-- were returning home after completing class. On their way, they went to the river to take bath, at one stage, Samira and Sohagi went under the water; but Habiba managed to reach bank of the river. Locals rushed to the spot after hearing scream of Habiba.”

“Later, being informed by locals, a team of divers recovered the bodies from the river around 4:15pm,” he added.
