5 get life term for gang-raping 2 sisters in Sylhet

Staff Correspondent, Sylhet: A court in Sylhet has sentenced five people to life term imprisonment in a case filed over gang-raping two sisters in Beanibazar upazila of the district.

Judge A M Zulfiqar Hayat of Additional District and Sessions Judges' Court in Sylhet handed down the verdict in presence of five out of six accused on Sunday noon.

The court also fined them TK 1 lakh each.

The court acquitted one of the accused as the allegation brought against him could not be proved.

On the night of May 24 in 2014, some youths stormed the house of the two sisters and gang-raped them after tying up their family members. Later, father of the two sisters filed a complaint with Beanibazar police station in this connection accusing five people.

On October 12 that year, police submitted charge sheet against six people after investigation.

After examining 12 witnesses and relevant documents, the court delivered the verdict in the case today.
