7 villages inundated as dam collapses in Hatiya

Noakhali Correspondent: At least seven villages in Char Ishwar union under isolated island upazila Hatiya of Noakhali were inundated as water entered breaching an embankment at ward no 1 and 2 of the union on Saturday afternoon.

The collapse of the embankment left about 6,000 people of the villages trapped in water.

Talukdar village, Badshah Mia Haji village, Abdul Latif Haji village, village no. 7, Farazi village are among the inundated villages.

According to local sources, the villages have been inundated due to heavy rain of consecutive two days and excessive tide in the Meghna river.

Local union parishad member Kamrul Islam Mohabbot confirmed the matter.

Hatiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khandaker Md Rezaul Karim said the affected people have moved to local shelter center as the embankment collapsed in the upazila.

The upazila administration is always inquiring about the people affected by the inundation, the UNO said.
