Attack on Zafar Iqbal: SUST security guard held

Staff Correspondent, Sylhet: Law enforcers held a security guard of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) for interrogation over the attack on the renowned writer Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal.
The detainee was known as Khalequzzaman who hailed from the attacker Faizrul’s area of Jogdal Union Parishad under Sunamganj’s Dirai upazila.
He worked as a contractual security guard in the varsity.
Khalequzzaman was held from 3rd floor of central library of the varsity around 4:30pm on Tuesday, according to witnesses.
SUST Proctor Prof Zahir Uddin Ahmed said that law enforcers contacted him seeking allowance to hold a security guard. He knew nothing more about the matter.
Security guard Younus who was on duty at the main gate of central library said four people in a black car took him up.
According to sources of the security guard company, two worked on the 3rd floor while three on the 4th of library building.
Shafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jalalabad Police Station of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) said that he was not aware of detention to the security guard.
A miscreant named Faizul carried out the attack on the renowned writer during a programme of the department of electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) of the university around 5:30pm on Saturday.
He was immediately admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Later, he was taken to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) by an air ambulance on directives of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He is currently undergoing treatment there.
SUST authorities filed a case with Jalalabad Police Station in this connection.
