DHAKA, July 5: Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) on Friday reiterated their stand for bringing back the lost glory of historic Suhrawardy Udyan by removing all illegal occupancy.

"The largest park in the capital Suhrawardy Udyan had lost its beauty and importance as illegal shops, young couples, drug addicts and floating people occupied most of the spaces of the historic ground."

BAPA general secretary Abdul Matin said this while speaking at a press briefing to present Suhrawardy Udyan inspection report at the Comrade Moni Singh-Farhad Memorial Trust auditorium at Purana Paltan here.

Columnist Syed Abul Moksud said, "The park has a profound connection with our history, so the government should evit all the illegal occupation from the park by forming a high power committee to bring back it`s lost glory."

They claimed still some land is used for golf playing though High Court declared illegal to allocate Dhaka Club a piece of land of Suhrawardy Udyan for a golf course by the writ petition of Bangladesh Environment Lawyers` Association (Bela) and Ain O Shalish Kendra (ASK).

The discussants demanded the construction of a boundary wall and remove all the illegal establishments from the park.

Chairman of FEJB Quamrul Islam Chowdhury and its general secretary Hasan Hafiz also supported the statement made by BAPA based on its inspection report And asked for immediate restoration of the lost glory of the historic Suhrawardy Udyan.
