‘Bangladesh has upgraded to middle-income country’

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi: Principal Information Officer of the government Kamrun Nahar has said Bangladesh has graded to a middle-income country.

She said, “Bangladesh has already achieved all the indexes needed to get middle-income country status. So, the country is now one of the middle-income countries.

Kamrun Nahar came up with the disclosure while exchanging views with officials of different government offices and journalists in Rajshahi on Thursday morning.

She said Bangladesh has become a middle-income country with combined efforts of all ministries.

The Principal Information Officer said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had a dream of poverty-free Bangladesh. Now his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina showed us the way of economic development. With her vision, the country has already achieved the status of middle-income country.

She said, according to United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP), to be promoted to a middle-income country, it is necessary to achieve three criteria. For middle-income country, per capita income must be $1,242. Now Bangladesh’s per capita income is $1,610. The Human Resources Development Index must be 66. Now Bangladesh’s index is 69.5. The highest value of economic risk can be 32 percent. Bangladesh achieved 25.03. So, Bangladesh achieved all the criteria. Now UN will officially declare it within some days.”
