Child domestic worker torture: Householder remanded

Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj: A Naryanganj court has placed a householder on a two-day remand in a case filed for torturing a child domestic worker.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Mehedi Hassan on Monday passed the order after police produced Ataullah Khan-Urmi couple before the court and sought a seven-day remand for each of them.

After hearing, the court placed Ataullah on a two-day remand and sent his wife Urmi to jail as she is currently pregnant of six months.

The court also ordered to send the child housemaid Mahi to a government safe home as her adopt parents have yet not responded to the court.

She has already been sent to the women, children and adolescents safe home at Bugla by-pass area in Gazipur, according to SI Illias of Fatullah Model Police Station, also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case.

According to the sources, Mahi was being tortured by the Ataullah-Urmi couple on Friday midnight. Hearing her screaming, neighbours rushed to the house and asked them what happened there. But the couple scolded them rather than opening the door. At one stage, locals broke the door and rescued the eight-year-old housemaid Mahi. Later, they handed over the couple to police after giving them a good thrashing.
