Coal lifting from Barapukuria mine resumes

Staff Correspondent, Rangpur: After three months of closure, coal lifting from Barapukuria mine has resumed today (Saturday).

Coal lifting experimentally began from the 1314 number tunnel today and the coal will be lifted in full swing from Monday.

On June 15, coal lifting came to a stop due to coal crisis in 1210 number tunnel. In that month, Barapukuria 525 MW thermal power plant of Dinajpur was closed due to coal crisis in Parbatipur, Dinajpur. The plant was shut down on July 22 owing to an acute shortage of coal as around 142,000 metric tons of coal meant for the power plant had disappeared.

After the unexpected shutdown of the plant, the country's 16 northern regions – covering Rangpur, Panchagarh, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Dinajpur, and Thakurgaon – faces the risk of unusual power cuts or low voltage problems.
