Ex-BIWTC GM lands in jail

Staff Correspondent, Khulna: A Khulna court has sent former general manager (GM) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Mazharul Haque to the jail in a corruption case filed for embezzling Tk 10,08,66,638 of Food Division.

Judge Md Shahidul Islam of Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court passed the order after rejecting bail plea on Sunday.

According to the court sources, M/S Rahim and Sons got contact for transportation of 610 metric ton rice, worth Tk Tk 10,08,66,638, of food division. But the contactor company embezzled the whole shipment of rice with association of BIWTC officials.

On January 14, 2003, Inspector Selina Akter of Khulna Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed case against five people with Khulna Sadar Police Station. After a long investigation, Shamim Iqbal, assistant director of ACC Khulna office submitted charge sheet on August 31 in 2016. Since, the accused went into hiding.

Khandoker Mujibur Rahman, Public Prosecutor (PP) and ACC’s lawyer, said former BIWTC GM Mazharul Haque appeared before the court on Sunday and sought for bail. But the court rejected his plea and sent him to jail.
