Faridpur clash leaves one dead

Faridpur Correspondent: A man was killed and 20 others were injured as two groups of villagers locked into a clash over establishing supremacy in the area in Saltha upazila of Faridpur early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Zia Sheikh, 30, a resident of Atghar union parishad of the upazila.

Faridpur police superintendent Subhash Chandra Saha said the clash ensued between two groups of people of Atghar and Gotri union parishads over establishing supremacy in the area, leaving one person killed on the spot and injuring 20 others.

Around 10 to 12 houses were also vandalised during the clash before the police managed to bring the situation under control, the police official said.

However, the residents of Atghar UP claimed that a group of supporters of Gotri UP unit General Secretary of Awami League Wadud Matubbar and Kanaipur UP Chairman Fakir Belayet attacked them with sharp weapons, prompting them to retaliate.

Atghar UP Chairman Shahidul Islam Khan Sohag said, “Supported by Wadud and Fakir, a gang of miscreants attacked our houses with sharp weapons and hacked Zia to death, triggering a fight between the two groups. A total of 20 people sustained severe injuries during the clash.”

Denying the allegation, Fakir Belayet told risingbd.com, “None of my people took part in the clash.”
