Thakurgaon Correspondent:  Three people were killed after members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) opened fire during a clash over a cow on Tuesday.

The incident took place at Bahrampur village under Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon district.

The deceased were identified as Nawab, 35, Sadek, 45, and Joynul, 12.

At least 16 people including BGB men were injured in the clash.

According to locals, Mahabub Ali at Bahrampur village bought a cow six months ago. BGB members went to his house to bring it as Indian cow. At that time, BGB members locked into a clash with his family members and locals.  Later, three people were killed in BGB firing.

Resident medical officer at Haripur Upazila Health Complex Dr Abdus Samad said they removed bullets from the bodies of 14 people and provided them with first aid at their hospital.

Later, they were referred to Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur for better treatment, he said.

Haripur Police Station OC Amiruzzaman confirmed the incident and said the situation has been brought under control. Police have been deployed in the area.

Commanding officer of BGB Thakurgaon 50 Battalion Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud said “The BGB men were forced to open fire in self-defence”.

He also claimed that cattle smugglers, armed with sharp weapons, attacked the BGB troopers at Bahrampur while they were returning after seizing several smuggled cows, forcing them to open fire in self-defence.
