Four killed in Cox's Bazar landslide

Cox's Bazar Correspondent: Four people have been killed and four others injured in separate incidents of landslide occurred due to heavy rain in Cox's Bazar.

The incidents happened at Light House area of Cox's Bazar sadar and Chainda area of Ramu upazila of the district early Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Shahed, 18, and Saddam Hossain of Cox's Bazar sadar while Saima, 5, and Jihan, 7, of Ramu.

The injured were known as Ziaur Rahman, 35, his wife Anarkoli, 29, Delwar Hossain, 25, and Arfat Hossain, 30.

Abdul Malek, deputy assistant director of Cox's Bazar Fire Service Station, said as landslide occurred at Chainda area of Ramu around 3:00am, four members of a family were buried under mud while they were in sleeping. Being informed, Fire Service men rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies of Saima and Jihan.

They also rescued their father Ziaur Rahman and mother Anarkoli. They were later admitted to Ramu Mother and Children Hospital, he added.



Malek said four other people were also buried under mud as another incident of landslide occurred at Light House area of the district town at the same time. Locals rescued them and took them to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital immediately. Of them, Mohammad Shahed and Saddam succumbed while undergoing treatment there. Delwar Hossain and Arfat Hossain have been undergoing treatment in the hospital.

It may be mentioned that it has been raining heavily in Cox's Bazar frequently since Monday noon. According to local met office, 179mm rain has been recorded during last 24 hours.  More rain is likely to happen and occur landslide in the district.
