Gangni municipal mayor jailed for 10 yrs

Meherpur Correspondent: A district court sentenced the Mayor of Gangni upazila of Meherpur district and convener of upazila Juba League Ashraful Islam to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in an arms case.

Judge Md Tajul Islam of Mehrpur Special Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict on Sunday.

Ashraful Islam was present at the court during the delivery of the verdict.

According to the case statement, acting on a tiff-off, Gangni Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sirajul Islam along with forces raided the house of Mayor Ashraful Islam on 27 May, 2012 and arrested him.

Police also seized a gun, two magazines and three rounds of bullets from his house.

Later, SI Sirajul Islam filed a case with Gangni Police Station under Arms Act.

SI Narayan Chandra Gosh submitted the charge-sheet to the court on June 16, 2012.

After examining the records and witnesses, special tribunal Judge Tajul Islam found him guilty and awarded him 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
