‘Govt launches mass-arrest to avoid defeat in city polls’

Staff Correspondent, Khulna: BNP nominated mayoral candidate in Khulna City polls Nazrul Islam Manju alleged that police ‘being instructed by the government’ are conducting drives at the houses of his party men, harassing and arresting them to avoid defeat in the city polls.”
The BNP candidate came up with the allegation in an urgent press conference on Wednesday morning.
However, police ruled out the allegations.
Manju said, “I also passed the night (Tuesday night) without sleeping. Since Tuesday noon, police conducted drives at houses of mine and my activists across the city for the second time. Law enforcers harassed them through scolding. They also arrested more than a hundred of my party men and threatened their family members.”
“Being informed, I made phone call to police commissioner. He told me that no instruction for arrest drive. I had been waiting taking his statement as true,” he added.
He said, “The government is using police dishonestly to avoid defeat in the city polls. I frequently had announced that we will not retreat from the election in fear of such harassments.”
Khulna City Corporation (KCC) polls is scheduled to be held on May 15.
