'Gunfight' kills robber in Khulna

Staff Correspondent, Khulna: An alleged robber was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Chuknagar of the district's Dumuria upazila early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Robiul alias Badsha, 35, son of Jafor Sheikh of Maltia village of the upazila.

Four cops including Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dumuria Police Station Sukumar Biswas were also injured in the incident.

Law enforcers seized a pistol, a cocktail and a machete from the spot.

Mamun, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Dumuria Police Station, said Robiul was arrested on Friday. On information he provided, a team of police conducted a drive at Chuknagar Madrasa road area to recover arms early Saturday. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, cohorts of Robiul fired on them. Police also retaliated for self-defence that triggered a gunfight. At one stage, Robiul was killed sustaining bullet hit.

Other miscreants, however, managed to flee the scene during the incident, he added.

Robiul was accused in robbery among five cases filed with Dumuria police station, he said.
