Ivy among dozens injured in Narayanganj clash

Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj: Dozens including Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy and a journalist were injured in a clash between supporters of the mayor and Local MP Shamim Osman over re-settling hawkers who were evacuated earlier.

The incident took place in the city on Tuesday afternoon.

Police fired around 300 rounds of blank shots to control the situation.

In face of attack by the supporters of Shamim Osman, Mayor Ivy took position with her people on the road. City dwellers formed a chain to save the mayor from the rivals' attack, but she sustained injuries by a brick bat.

The chaos forced to stop vehicle movement from Chashara to rail gate no. 2, creating traffic congestion on the route.

Later, Shamim Osman also took position on Bangabandhu road with his people in support of hawkers. Then, injured Ivy rushed to Narayanganj Press Club. Police brought the situation control after their frantic efforts of an hour.

The injured includes general secretary of Narayanganj Press Club Sharif Uddin Sabuj.

All kinds of traffic movement were stopped while the report was filed around 6:00pm.
