Staff Correspondent, Tangail: Water level of Jamuna river is increasing due to continuous rainfall for several days.

The Jamuna river is flowing 146 centimetres above the danger level after increasing its water level by 20 centimetres in the last 24 hours.

Shahjahan Siraj, executive engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Tangail, confirmed the matter.

Low-lying areas of five upazilas in Tangail district have been inundated in the flash floods, leaving more than one lakh people stranded in water. Valuables and other necessary things of the flood victims have been washed away, he said.

Siraj said fresh 20 villages including Tangail sadar, Basail, Naogaon, Josihati, Tartia, Tirganj, Fulki and Moitha have gone under water as the embankment of Jhenai river in Tangail sadar has collapsed this morning.

More than one lakh people are leading a very inhumane life after being stranded in flood water as at least 10 villages in Kalihati upazila have been flooded due to the collapse of the embankment in Hatia and Louhajong upazilas, he added.
