KCC polls: Case filed against newly elected mayor Khaleque

Staff Correspondent, Khulna: A case has been filed against newly elected mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque on allegations of concealing information in the affidavit and different irregularities in the polls.

BNP's defeated mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Monju filed the case with Khulna Election Tribunal (Joint-District Sessions Judge Court-1).

According to the case statement, the plaintiff demanded instructions to the Election Commission (EC) to cancel declaration of the Awami League (AL) candidate Khaleque’s victory.

Complaint’s lawyer Nurul Hassan Ruba confirmed the news on Friday.

He said, “The city BNP president and KCC mayor candidate Nazrul Islam Monju filed the case on Wednesday. The court fixed August 6 for acceptance hearing of the case.”

He quoting the case statement said, “AL candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque concealed information in the affidavit of the election held on May 15. BNP candidate’s polling agents were also driven out from the centres. Election Commission gave no solution even after filing allegations to it.”

“Besides, different pictures of vote rigging were also mentioned in the case statement,” he added.

Election Commission suspended voting at three centres due to vote rigging and irregularities.

The ruling Awami League candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque won the mayoral race by nearly 68,600 votes against his nearest rival BNP-backed candidate Nazrul Islam Monju.
