Man killed in ‘gunfight’ day after release from jail

Staff Correspondent, Jashore: A man, who got release from jail a day ago, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between two gangs of robbers at Hanuar area on Pulerhat-Raiganj road in Jashore early Wednesday, police claimed.

The deceased was identified as Muktar Hossain, 50, son of late Habibur Rahman Habi of Ratandia village of the district’s Monirampur upazila.

He was sued in at least 10 cases including murder, robbery and extortion.

Mokarram Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Monirampur Police Station, said a ‘gunfight’ took place between two groups of robbers at Hanuar area on Pulerhat-Raiganj road in Jashore early Wednesday. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and recovered Muktar’s bullet-hit body from there.

Law enforcers also recovered two gun shells from the spot, he added.

Robbers took preparations to commit robbery on the spot two or three times during the last month. But police foiled their attempts. Muktar was accused in at least 10 lawsuits including two murder cases.

Muktar’s wife Sumi Khatun said, “Police arrested her husband (Muktar) from Churamonkati area of Jashore on October 1 last year. Since, he had been in jail before getting release on Tuesday.
