No new settlement in Rangamati risky areas

Staff Correspondent, Chittagong: Rangamati district administration has imposed a restriction on the construction of new settlements at any risky areas in the landslides-ravaged district.

Confirming the matter, District Deputy Commissioner Manzarul Mannan said permission will be required from the administration from now on to construct new settlements in hilly areas.

Imposing the restriction on the construction of new settlements, Mannan said no new settlements can be constructed at any risky areas of the landslides-ravaged district without any permission from the administration.

The restriction will be effective until further notice, he added.

Based on the consultation of experts, this decision has been taken considering the issue of protecting properties and lives of people, he said.

Around 1,700 families were damaged in the recent landslide incident in Rangamati district where 1,130 families were from Rangamati sadar, he said.
