One killed in Laxmipur ‘gunfight’

Laxmipur Correspondent: A suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Dattapara under Laxmipur Sadar upazila early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Russel alias Kala Russel, son of Abdul Karim at Choiani Takba under Chatkhil upazila in Noakhali district.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandraganj Police station Mokhtar Hossain said police arrested Russel earlier with a gun, two bullets and 11 pieces of Yaba. Acting on the statement of Russel, police along with Russel conducted a drive at Dattapara for recovering arms. Sensing the law enforcers’ presence, Russel’s associates opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight.

Russel died on the spot while the others managed to flee the scene.

Police also recovered a pistol, a LG and two bullets from the spot.

Russel was wanted in 20 cases, including that of robbery, murder and other criminal cases, the OC also said.
