Operation to begin after SWAT reaches C'nawabganj ‘militant den’

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi: Operation will apparently begin at the suspected militant hideout at Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district after the special detective branch of police 'Special Weapon and Tactic Team (SWAT)' reaches there.

Chapainawabganj Additional Superintendent of Police Mahbub Alam Khan said a team of SWAT has already left Dhaka for the spot.

He hoped that the operation is likely to begin soon after the team of SWAT reaches the spot.

Earlier, lawmen cordoned off a one-storied house in the area since early Wednesday suspecting presence of militants inside.

Assistant Police Super of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Towhid Hossain said tipped off, lawmen encircled the suspected militant den around 5:30am. The militants fired several gunshots from the house towards the law enforcers.

There are 7 to 8 people inside the house, he said.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed around the house. Road traffic in the area has been closed, removing the surrounded residents.

Restriction on gathering of people – Section 144 – has been imposed on the area since around 11:30am, Shafiqul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shibganj said.

Earlier, on Friday and Saturday, huge explosives and bomb making equipments were recovered from a house in Jhenaidah. Police on Tuesday launched 'Block Raid' at several houses of Hargram village in Rajshahi city. But nothing was found there.
