Relatives of Hannan, Bipul asked to meet them

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: Kashimpur High Security Jail Authority asked relatives of death-row convicts Mufti Abdul Hannan and his associate Sharif Shahedul Bipul to meet them in jail.

The jail authority sent the messages to their relatives on Tuesday morning.

However, no relatives met them till the report was filed at noon.

Md Mizanur Rahman, senior jail super of Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur, told reporters that both the convicts were informed over the dismissal of their mercy petitions by the president on Monday. On Tuesday morning, messages were sent to ask their relatives to meet them. But, nobody yet came to see them.

In 2004, former UK high commissioner Anwar Choudhury along with around 70 others was hurt and three were killed in the attack at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet.

The Bangladesh-born envoy, barely 18 days into his new assignment, suffered minor leg injuries in the grenade attack after Juma prayers.

On December 23, 2008, the Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Mufti Hannan, Bipul and Ripon to death, and Ovi and Abu Zandal to life imprisonment for the grenade attack and the killings.
